Growing vegetables training

Community Harvest at Josiah Braithwaite Community Garden

July – October 2020

Picking beans in 2019

This training is being organised as part of our contribution to Capital Growth’s
Community Harvest project, which is aiming to increase the amount of food we are growing to contribute to the Nubian Life Resource Centre for meals they are cooking for vulnerable adults in the area.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions we only have space for five volunteers to join this
training so we will give priority to people who can commit to attending the sessions on Saturday afternoons.

Growing Vegetables Training

This training will teach you about growing vegetables using an organic, permaculture approach. This means we will be considering how to best provide for the soil and wildlife to support an ecosystem around the plants we are growing.
Most of the training will be practical since we will be growing vegetables, some from seed, others from transplants and some already growing in the garden.
You will also have a confirmed space on the online workshops taking place
fortnightly on Tuesday evenings.
This training is suitable for anyone who wants to learn how to grow vegetables from seed and transplants. Given the time of year the vegetables we will grow will be specific to the season (see below).
Our priority is to grow food for the Nubian Life Resource Centre but you will also be able to use the seeds and compost we have along with what you are learning from the training to grow vegetables at home.

The training will cover these areas:

  • Choosing vegetables to grow at different times of year
  • Understanding their needs (soil, space, sun etc)
  • How to plant seeds
  • Taking care of seeds and seedlings
  • Potting on
  • Transplanting
  • Keeping plants watered
  • Feeding – what to feed plants
  • Harvesting

If you would like to join the training email The training will start on 11th July.
